We should all be aware of security and the need to protect ourselves from both crime and terrorism. To help with this, NaCTSO has developed a new toolkit for small and micro businesses to assist with crime prevention and deterring terrorism.

Though you may feel the possibility of being caught up in a terrorist attack is unlikely, attacks are possible anywhere in the United Kingdom. As a business and potential employer, you also have a legal duty of care to your staff and any visitors.

Effective mitigations against crime and terrorism do not need to be costly. Whether you are in owned or leased property, our toolkit can provide you with low effort and low cost measures that can deter both criminals and terrorists. This includes:

  • Physical security elements including lighting, alarms, doors and locks
  • Security culture procedures including Run Hide Tell and how to respond to unattended or suspicious items
  • Information resources, local schemes and legislation

You may already have some of these measures in place to deter criminals, in which case this booklet will help you identify their additional purpose in defeating terrorism. For example, installing locks on doors will have the dual impact of frustrating both criminals and terrorists.

By considering how to strengthen the security of your premises and taking action, you can better prepare for, manage and recover from a criminal or terrorist incident.
